FROM PROBLEMS TO SOLUTIONS

Economic development is necessary if we want to improve society. Therecomes a time when the old must give way to the new, and it is not possible topreserve everything from our past as we move towards the future. Finding andkeeping the right balance between progress and the protection of cultural sitescan be a big challenge.

Big challenges, however, can sometimes lead to great solutions. In the1950s, the Egyptian government wanted to build a new dam across the Nile inorder to control floods, produce electricity, and supply water to more farmersin the area. But the proposal led to protests. Water from the dam would likelydamage a number of temples and destroy cultural relics that were an importantpart of Egypt’s cultural heritage. After listening to the scientists who hadstudied the problem, and citizens who lived near the dam, the government turnedto the United Nations for help in 1959.

A committee was established to limit damage to the Egyptian buildings andprevent the loss of cultural relics. The group asked for contributions fromdifferent departments and raised funds within the international community.Experts investigated the issue, conducted several tests, and then made aproposal for how the buildings could be saved. Finally, a document was signed, and the work began in 1960.

The project brought together governments and environmentalists from aroundthe world. Temples and other cultural sites were taken down piece by piece, andthen moved and put back together again in a place where they were safe from thewater. In 1961, German engineers moved the first temple. Over the next 20 years, thousands of engineers and workers rescued 22 temples and countless culturalrelics. Fifty countries donated nearly $80 million to the project.

When the project ended in 1980, it was considered a great success. Not onlyhad the countries found a path to the future that did not run over the relics ofthe past, but they had also learnt that it was possible for countries to worktogether to build a better tomorrow.

The spirit of the Aswan Dam project is still alive today. Perhaps the bestexample is shown by UNESCO, which runs a programme that prevents world culturalheritage sites around the world from disappearing. If a problem seems toodifficult for a single nation, the global community can sometimes provide asolution.

A DAY IN THE CLOUDS

The air is thin and we have to rest several times on the short hike fromcamp. To our left, snow-covered mountains disappear into clouds that seem almostclose enough to touch. On the plain in front of us, we can just make out a herdof graceful animals. This is why we’re here—to observe Tibetan antelopes.

Tibetan antelopes live on the plains of Tibet, Xinjiang, and Qinghai.Watching them move slowly across the green grass. I’m struck by their beauty.I’m also reminded of the danger they are in. They are being hunted, illegally, for their valuable fur.

My guide is Zhaxi, a village from Changtang. He works at the ChangtangNational Nature Reserve. The reserve is a shelter for the animals and plants ofnorthwestern Tibet. To Zhaxi, the land is sacred and protecting the wildlife isa way of life. “We’re not trying to save the animals,” he says. “Actually, we’retrying to save ourselves.”

The 1980s and 1990s were bad times for the Tibetan antelope. The populationdropped by more than 50 percent. Hunters were shooting antelopes to makeprofits. Their habitats were becoming smaller as new roads and railways werebuilt.

In order to save this species from extinction, the Chinese governmentplaced it under national protection. Zhaxi and other volunteers watched over theantelopes day and night to keep them safe from attacks. Bridges and gates wereadded to let the antelopes move easily and keep them safe from cars andtrains.

The measures were effective. The antelope population has recovered and inJune 2015, the Tibetan antelope was removed from the endangered species list. The government, however, does not intend to stop the protection programmes, since the threats to the Tibetan antelope have not yet disappeared.

In the evening, I drink a cup of tea and watch the stars. I think about theantelopes and what Zhaxi told me. Much is being done to protect wildlife, but ifwe really want to save the planet, we must change our way of life. Only when welearn to exist in harmony with nature can we stop being a threat to wildlife andto our planet.

STRONGER TOGETHER:

HOW WE HAVE BEEN CHANGED

BY THE INTERNET

Much has been written about the wonders of the World Wide Web. There arecountless articles telling us how the Internet has made our lives moreconvenient. We no longer have to wait in line or carry cash around when we goshopping. We can get the most updated information from large databases. We candownload software, documents, and images whenever we need them. But the Internethas done much more for people than simply make life more convenient. People’slives have been changed by online communities and social networks.

Jan Tchamani, an English teacher in Birmingham, UK, suddenly developed aserious illness and had to quit her job. At age 50, she found herself out ofwork and stuck at home with only her computer to keep her company. After awhile, she discovered that surfing the Internet could help her feel less lonelyand bored. She could listen to music, watch films, play games, and explore theworld. She also joined an online group where she could talk about her problemsand get support and advice from others. She realised that one of the greatestbenefits of the Internet was its ability to remove the distance that usuallyexists between people.

She was so inspired by the people she met online that she decided to startan IT club to teach older people how to use computers and the Internet. She andher friends now organise events and collect money to pay for private teachers. Many people have been helped by the club. A 59-year-old man learnt how to applyfor work online and found a great job. Now that he works and can take care ofhimself, his daughter has time to study at university. A 61-year-old woman whowas living alone has started a small online company together with two friends. She no longer feels lonely, and her company has become quite successful.

Jan has started taking online classes to learn more about how to use theInternet to make society better. She believes that it is highly important tobridge the digital divide and make sure that everyone has access to the Internetand knows how to use new technology. Her next goal is to start a charity websiteto raise money for children in poor countries.

Jan’s life has been greatly improved by the Internet. “When you go throughtough times, you meet others who are facing similar challenges,” Jan says.“Thinking about other people’s situations inspired me to offer help.”

l-条件从句与现在事实不一致,句型为:If+主语十过去时,tiag+should (could,would,或might)+动词原形,例如:If lwere you,1 would study hard.

2.条件从句与过去事实不一致,句型为:If+主语+had+过去分词,主语+should(could,would,或might)+have+过去分词,例如:If I had not studied hard.1would have failed in theexam last term

3.条件从句与将来事实不一致,句型为:lf+主语+should/were to+do,主语+should( could.)+原形do,例如:If lwere to go to the moon one day,I could see itwith my own eyes.

3.在条件句中如果出现were,had,should可省去if'

re I to go tothe moon one clay,1 would see it with myown eyes.

Who / whoever, what / whatever

一般说来,what/who等含特指意义,而whatever/whoever等含泛指意义,意为"无论什么/无论谁"。

It is generally considered unwise to give a child ____ he or she wants.

A. however B. whatever C. whichever D. whenever

I can't remember at the moment who has said the words.

Where, when, why

Where, when, why

-I drove to Zhuhai for the air show last week.

-Is that ____ you had a few days off?

A. why B. when C. that D. where

It was a matter of ____ would take the position.

A. who B. whoever C. whom D. whomever

1.wish

I wi。hIwere you.

Iwish I had visited the White House whenI was inthe States与将来愿望不一致,用主语+would (could)+原形。

2.It's time句型:当lt's tine后用that从句时应该为主i吾+should+动词原形或主语十过去时,例如:It,s timethatyou went to school.或It's time that you should go to schooL

3- If only引起的感叹句相当于“How I wish+宾语从句”。

(l)If only he could come.

(2)If only I had known the answer.

4.WOuld rather,asif(though)

(l)I'd rather you posted the letter right away.

(2)She loves the children as if they were hers.

如but for,but that,without,in case of, under more favorablecondition等。

如so that, unless, in case, supposing, lest, provided(倘若……),for fearthat(唯恐),in orderthat, on condition that, if only(要是……

The foreign teacherspokeslowly in case we misunderstood him这位外籍教师说得很慢以免我们误解。

without, but. but for, otherwise引起的短语或句子常暗含着含蓄条件。例如:

①Without you,1 would never know him

②But for your oooperation, we wouldn't have done it

③But that she was afraid, she would have said no. .

④i would be most glad to help you, butI am busy now.

⑤I would have come to the party yesterday, but ljwas working.

⑥I am busy now, otherwise l would do you the favor!
