Inspired by the student council advisors at my high school.
Student council was a big part of my life in high school. I have participated in it since my frst year of high school. When I frst joined， I was quiet， na?ve， and unwilling to participate in many activities. I was scared to meet new people and afraid to apply myself. This all began to change. Half way through my frst year in student council， one of the advisors can up to me and asked why I did not participate that much. I did not have an answer for her and did not know how to respond. After this， I began to think of an answer. I became frustrated and decided to change. I started to show up at events and had a great time. I realized I loved this and wanted to start leading these activities. In my sophomore， junior， and now my senior year of high school， I asserted myself and took on a strong leadership role in student council. I did not fgure out the answer to why I was so reserved until this year with the help of this question.
When I looked up leadership in the dictionary， it said that it was the capacity to lead and the act or instance of leading. These are two very broad defnitions of leadership. Many people have different notions of what this word actually means. When I was challenged to use different items to describe what leadership actually is， I thought this was going to be a hard and obnoxious task. What could I learn from comparing leadership to a stuffed animal or a rubber chicken? But when I sat down to come up with a couple of answers， I realized that leadership could be compared to almost anything a person wants.
All I know about leadership I learned from a calculator. A calculator can add everything together to come up with the best answer. It can delet e what is unnecessary and only include what is important. It can solve any type of problem. These are all important equalities a leader has to have. A leader has to be able to add all of the ideas together to make the best possible plan. Leaders have to know how to decipher the good and the bad out of an idea. They have to be versatile and know how to deal with different types of issues.
All I know about leadership I learned from a ball. A ball is able to bounce back up after it is dropped. It is round and has no creases. A ball can be thrown back and forth to different people. All of these qualities are also leadership qualities. A leader has to be ready for every situation that is thrown at him or her. He or she has to be able to bounce back from any setbacks and never dwell on the past. Leaders have to exhibit many qualities and never be closed-minded about a situation. A leader must be able to delegate when he or she cannot get the work done. They have to trust everyone they lead to be able to "catch the ball" and keep a project rolling.
This activity made me realize that being a leader is so much more than just having authority and having the ability to take control of a situation. A leader has to be trusting of all the people he or she leads and， leaders must be able to combine ideas into one encompassing idea. They cannot sit in the background and watch events happen; they have to jump in and be involved. They should not delegate all their responsibilities away.
Leadership is more than what the dictionary says it is.
I learned through all of this that I have many of these qualities.
I have the ability to solve problems， lead through adversity， and be versatile. From answering this question， I realized that I could lead effectively， even if my leadership style is different from other individuals. When I joined student council in my frst year of high school， I did not have these qualities because I was never put into a situation where I had to lead. I was too reserved to try. When I tried， I learned that I could succeed in this. I did not realize until I answered this question about leadership. 1.随意夸下海口
如果你没参加过很多志愿活动，不是学校的明星运动员，或者演过的最牛逼的角色是舞台上的那棵静默的榆树时，那就不要假装你是一个大人物了。不诚实的表现增加了你遭拒的几率。别害怕讲真事儿，即便看上去好像不起作用。
2.旁门左道
我们都听说过都市传奇。一个女孩将旅游时穿的人字拖交上去了；一个男孩因为在推特上展示了他为密西根狼獾写的诗，而失去了读密歇根大学的机会……这样“八仙过海，各显神通”的大神比比皆是。不过，你要知道，关键词是“He’s Just NotT hat Into You”，人家对你不感冒，你怎么做都无济于事的。记住：这是特例，可不是规则。
3.慎用开篇名言
假如说你是为莎士比亚的名言而活，或者肯尼迪的爱国诉求真的改变了你的人生，那跟别人分享他们的智慧无可厚非——毕竟，他们确实很聪明。但是，大学的招生负责人想认识的是你，而不是认识他们。如果你觉得某句名言跟你要写的东西确实有很大的关系，那引用一个短语就足够了。将名言和个人经历结合起来，比如你第一次听这句话时的强烈震动，或者一个你爱的人经常对你说这句话等。最重要的是，一定要选择上档次的名言（你要是想引用麦莉·赛勒斯的名言，那神仙也帮不了你）。
4.泛泛而谈志愿经历，缺乏原创性
去南非做志愿者是你经历过的最美好的事情。你交了很多好朋友，度过了美好的时光，遇到了一些牛逼人物并学到了很多东西……（此处忽略了很多“最”什么什么）我们相信这是真的。但是写这有啥用呢？成千上万的其他申请者也写了这些啊，跟你一模一样。人家怎么把你从芸芸众生中挑选出来呢？真捉急，招生的也是人呀！
不孤僻，规则就是用来打破的。小编特别提醒大学，一定不要写“我去了哪哪哪我帮了别人到那时我才知道我的人生原来可以很有意思”等等等等，要去写你遇到的具体困难，或者某段具体的谈话。你在写的时候就可以问自己：“除了我，别人会写这个吗？”如果答案是肯定的，那你还是回去再琢磨琢磨吧。
5.文章中有显而易见的错误
最容易出局的文章是什么样的呢？没有检查第二遍的！
就算你是一个文字高手，你也得让别人读一遍你的文章。可能有拼写错误，你必须让别人看看，他还可以为你的文章内容做出指导。小编提醒大家将你的文章在别人面前大声读出来——即使你很害羞。有的句子写到纸上很棒，但读出来就离题千里了。
6.文章过度强调悲情体
每个人都以自己独特的方式面对过死亡。那或者是喜爱的宠物，一个老友或者爷爷奶奶。毋庸置疑，死亡会对你有很大的触动，特别是你第一次面对死亡的时候。但是同样的，这不应该是你文章的基调。你在悲情体文章的最后，不应该是得出了人生的意义和死亡的真谛什么的，而是你的反省，或者这是如何左右你的人生轨迹的。
7.内容过于稀松平常
聪明人应该这样做：如果你想要申请一个学校，你应该对学校有所了解（开头写明它的地点是个不错的选择）。太多的学生写文章时都忘记了自己的出发点。可以想象，有多少招生负责人想用红笔在他们的文章上划叉。

In doing so, I hope to expand my knowledge to achieve a level of understanding satisfactory to a potential degree level student. In addition to Physics and Maths, I am also studying Biology which provides me with the opportunity to develop my practical skills as I am required to work within groups. My communication skills have been put to the test during these lessons and I have proved many times that I am a team player.
After much research, I decided to attend taster courses at City University and Queen Mary University of London to experience what engineering involves. These informative taster courses offered me a unique chance to understand and to observe different areas of engineering which subsequently led me to the decision to pursue mechanical engineering. Its ability to allow me to see how things work fascinates me and furthermore, as mechanical engineering is a diverse field, it will allow me to learn and use many skills which can be transferred onto many employment opportunities.
Although I have enjoyed the challenge that my school-based work has given me, I have always sought to extend my knowledge. Recently, I built a computer. I discovered how each component is connected and how one energy source is converted into another. This has allowed me to apply the theory I learn within the curriculum to real situations. Furthermore, I was able to see how the components fit together by taking apart unwanted pieces from my old computer.
I have always been willing to give my time to take part in activities such as volunteering. I once raised money for the Marie Curie foundation. During this period, I improved my communication skills and confidence as I met and talked to many members of the community. I found that this experience was rewarding and fulfilling. I am a trusted member of my year group and when asked to be an ambassador for my sixth form, I accepted. This experience allowed me to demonstrate my organisation and communicational skills as I was required to confidently guide and talk to many potential students to the college. In addition, throughout my academic career, I have played an active role in a variety of different extracurricular activities. I am an adept musician and passed my grade 4 examinations in flute. Although I have decided to discontinue the examinations, every year during events such as Chinese New Year, I play the flute for my local Chinese community.
I believe that success as an engineer in a modern society requires a combination of management, communication and business skills. Therefore, with my previous experiences, focused attitude and will for success, I have the ability and motivation to meet the demands of studying at degree level. 招生官阅读一份申请材料的时间非常有限，你如果不能确保他在浏览你申请文书的时候，每一个词都打动他的心；也不要让你的文章，看到开头就能想到结尾。
以上，只是从选题的角度，告诉大家尽量避免的题材。当然不排除有学生能把非常陈旧的话题写出自己的新意。但如果你没有能力把淘宝爆款穿得清新脱俗，就不要凑这个热闹啦！
